• GamePro dislikes SWTOR - Silly arguments inside

Usually, I don't take sides if someone loves or hates SWTOR, in the end it's all about personal tastes and whatnot. I won't consider myself a SWTOR "fanboy" either, although I love the game, even with its obvious flaws.

Sombody tipped me off today saying that the guys from GamePro slammed Star Wars: The Old Republic pretty hard and of course, I was curious to investigate. I'm not familiar with the site so I don't know exactly who are the people behind it and what's their gaming experience.

With that in mind here's the video:

I've watched the full thing, although I wanted to shut it down at 3:00. It's not that I don't respect other people's opinions and I don't expect everyone to like the game...BUT:

    - How on earth can you say that one of the disaadvantages of the game are the cutscenes. Really? The cutscenes? The guy, named for user-friendly purposes with X, said that he was happy that WoW came with text-based questing so he can finish the quests faster. Ok X I understand, you want a fast paced grinding spider killing MMO..we get it. Our friend X also said that he's not quite interested in the storyline..again...really? Star Wars? "I don't want to passively watch the story play out, I want to be a part of it!" You want to farm droids until 50? Have you seen the dialogue options? He ends up the sentence with "..just tell me what to do"..we will X, we will...reconsider giving opinions for cars, you might sell a few.

    - The guy #2 comes along and says character creation sucks, because they all look the same. We marked this guy with Y, for a later Wikipedia reference and other famous sites. So Y says that Bioware did a crap job with the characters. Say no more Y, I feel you, it's ok..I'll email Bioware right now and tell them to add some horns and tusks into the mix, to spice it up a bit eh?

    - X pops again, spamming the words "straight outta the gates" and saying that the game took him back when playing WoW. Oh X, your cute little WoW comparison is kinda new, I LOVE IT! No, not really, sorry. Did I mention that X says that he wants to be a part of the story, not letting the story play out? And then he says the word Blizzard, which makes stick a fork into my eye. For security purposes, I propose we are shutting X down..agreed?

These are only some thoughts after watching the whole video. For those preparing to bash me WoW-style, I'm not a WoW hater...actually, I played WoW since US Beta, until 3 months ago. Not a hater..but a player kk?

I'm sure you guys may find this video funny, maybe some of you will agree with some thoughts presented there, but overall, I think this is a silly SILLY attempt to bash a product that's not even out. Yes, SWTOR has some flaws/bugs and it's missing some features, but if you want to start comparing this to WoW , let's compare it to WoW Beta..agreed? I'm thinkin' Mr X & Mr Y didn't play WoW Beta at all...actually, to think of it, I don't think they played Vanilla at all. So, drawing the good ol' thin line, I think we may have the worst arguments in the history of a game review. GamePro SWTOR Review - 1/10 Why 1? Because they bothered to upload the damn thing on YouTube.

I'll let you guys draw the conclusions, but GamePro should start being Pro and review a product based on its current development stage, its general content and gameplay (and that means endgame too X), and, of course, not comparing apples and oranges. With that in mind, for me, GamePro becomes GameSilly.

UPDATE: It seems that GameSilly was on a desperate streak, I found an article, dated 3 days ago, in which they said that the CEO of Activision thinks SWTOR will fail. Again, how desperate can you be? The article can be found here and their source is here. If you read the source, you'll see that there's no hint or info whatsoever that implies such a headline. The CEO only said that EA might face some profit "issues", mainly because they have to pay license rights/royalties to Lucas Arts. Yep GameSilly, we're glad now that you're out of business and we totally understand why. GG

I haven't watched their review yet, and it sounds like they were overly negative and honestly any review of an MMO before it goes live is silly as features and balancing is still in progress, and will continue to be even after the game launches. But so far in my very limited open beta weekend I had enough fun with the game to pre-order, and I haven't played WoW in months. Now I do have concerns about TOR end game. Part of the draw is the story for me and that story effect has the potential to become silly at the point that you are repeating the same content over and over again as is typical in any MMO end game. The leveling in the limited time I have had to play has been fun, as has the low level pvp, but only time will tell if end game will be satisfying enough to keep me subscribed.

I don't agree that you should be comparing TOR beta to Vanilla WoW beta though. TOR is competing with WoW NOW, not against a WoW beta happened years ago. TOR gets to learn and copy things they like or avoid things they felt were mistakes with WoW so it is fair to compare their core features. Sure WoW naturally is going to have much more content at this point, but one of the key reasons WoW exploded in the MMO field is because they were able to copy things from other MMOs and then improve on them. TOR is bound to get a ton of initial subscribers just based on Star Wars and Bioware, but they have a lot of pressure to have a fun end game once the story line that goes a long with leveling ends. That will be the deciding factor for me on if I stick with the game or if I play thru a few classes story lines and cancel in a few months. Once the newness wears off, TOR will need to have an end game as good or better than WoWs to sustain long term interest.

I'm not comparing WoW Beta to Tor Beta features wise, because it's clear that, it's no fair. I'm comparing the 2 beta's only from a debugging/development standpoint, it's impossible to release a perfect game from Beta and Bioware WILL add/repair features/bugs based intirely on this Beta feedback and general game feedback. Now, bashing a game that lacks that and that by only playing 5h Beta, it's only stupid and retarded

It's a rather limited approach to a review. They haven't actually commented on much at all. It's a rather bland and generic review, if you can call it a review at all.

Now having said that, they do have a couple of points. I an also kinda glad not everyone is jumping on the "look how cool this is" bandwagon like with Rift which was a pretty mediocre game. To comment on those points:

      1. The WoW comparison is not what people want to hear, but it is valid. Gameplay wise the game brings very little in terms of new stuff to the table, and let's face it. WoW is the big competitor, SWTOR is trying to face down a game with 7 years of development without being innovative.
      2. The story driven content is fantastic for some. Not so fantastic for others. That's also true. Is it a reason for a review like this? No, it's just information for gamers. Bad choice presenting it like this.
      3. SWTOR does require more polishing.

But they actually have some things to say which prove the point of the SWTOR fans:

      1. Story driven content. Yes, again, but this is the one feature that sets SWTOR apart and which can draw in people.
      2. Classic MMO, which by the way equals successful MMO.
      3. Star Wars oozes from every crack and seam.

The they say some stuff that is just downright stupid on character creation (use that for a negative review... really?) and that one guy's constant blathering about being objective based. All in all it's an amateuristic review at best and that's being generous. The review is overly focussed on little details and personal tastes. Having said that, some of the points are valid, and Bioware would do well to heed these sounds not to fall into the same pitfall as other games.

Not one of these people could be called a pro in this business. SWTOR isn't perfect for sure and it's not trying to re invent the wheel. BIOWARE says this right up front.

I was laughing pretty hard at most of their attempts to validate. Including. I'm a Star Wars fan and was really psyched but I didn't really care for the story." or "Where's my actual Aliens to play as, you know?" or "Your ship got stolen cause your an idiot."

I have beta'd the game and love it, Also I can tell they didnt do much on the on the game... If you want to skip the cut scenes and dont care about the story, you just hit the space bar... Reports like this is probably why Gamepro on line is going under...

The moment any one of those reveiwers opened there mouths, I wanted to punch them in the face. They are the most retarded group of reveiwers I have ever seen.

Look at how they played the game, mouse clicking skills, spent a few hours, which is nothing, they called it alliance side, blue side, LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They have no clue what they are talking about and this is exactly why Gamepro is shutting down.

80-90% of World of Warcraft players actually love SWTOR and it makes me lol!

To rate a MMO for playing it in beta for only a few hours I can see it being like this, especially if you have played the same MMO for the past 7+ years. There are things I can see people not liking about it, I admit some of the cut scenes seemed to drag on, but if you don't care about the story, space bar till your next decision.

I didn't see SWTOR as a grind fest like WoW, don't recall a single quest directing me to go kill womp rats till I get 3 teeth. Now there were quest that required drops, the drop rate was amazing, but at the same time I get a bonus quest. One that can be chosen to be ignored and still continue the story. But, for completionists, that is hard to ignore.

This game is nothing but story, the fact that it is before the movies, but has the same environment is amazing, the similarities, the vastness. I didn't get into the story of WoW till well in the game when people started talking about other things. The fact of having to read the quest bored me to death and rarely did I know why I was killing 20 things.

I do have to admit that SWTOR is huge and running around everywhere kind of sucked. I couldn't wait till 25 to get my speeder, sprint at 15 helped some, but then I end up on Tatooine and it is so big that it felt like the speeder just wasn't fast enough.

hbomb83 I LOL'd a good one at your deciphered version.

WoW player since beta and I only played a bit of the last SWTOR beta. Yet everything these guys complain about are the things that made me LIKE SWTOR. I loved the drawn out quest dialogue. It made you feel like you were part of something that mattered. A quest at lvl 1 in SWTOR felt more epic than a lvl 85 quest in WoW! Instead of an observer, I feel like I'm part of the story. Yet some just have to get to max level ASAP or they QQ and toss out the too common label of EPIC FAIL. Those players can stay in Azeroth for all I care and leave the SW Galaxies for us to populate!

Seriously how can theese guys be so SILLY. I played WoW for 2 Years and I was not in any way so touched by the Story as I was when I tried out SwTOR.

I didn't even felt that it mattered any difference if I did or did not do the quests... I both Love Bioware games and Star wars so for me this is a HUGE insult. I respect people's opinions but this just made me SICK.
