Cunning Vs. Aim? What is best for a Gunslinger?

I am leveling my GS and I noticed that many of the characters of that ilk--taking notes from the various companions of all classes--have both Aim and Cunning. I know that Bioware suggests that the primary attribute is what a player should build upon, but the question still remains.

No, there's no question. The stats are built very specifically to make gearing easier.

Smuggler and Imperial Agent - Cunning
Bounty Hunter and Trooper - Aim
    Warrior and Knight - Strength
    Inquisitor and Consular - Willpower

    There are no exceptions.

Your companions have their own classes and rules. To know how to gear them, look at their stats when you get them. They'll have 2 stats that are much higher than all the rest. Endurance will be one of those, the other one is the stat you need to gear them for.

As a Smuggler, no matter which AC you choose, your 2 highest stats will always be Endurance and Cunning. As a Bounty Hunter, mine will always be Aim and Endurance.

Where things get more tricky and more up to you to pick and choose is when you start getting the secondary stats on your gear. Things like Power, Tech Power, Absorption, Defense, Accuracy Rating, Critical Rating, things like that. Even then it's not too hard. As a Tank I mostly ignore gear with offensive secondary stats like Critical Rating and stack up on gear that increases Defense, Absorption, or Shield Rating, for example.

Cunning is the way on my smuggler, with the secondary stat I go for (if I have a choice) is usually Power.

The option is usually power or critical, not sure how the two stats work out but I read somewhere that sawbones benefits from power>crit.

Actually Razial, Power is a much better stat for DPS as opposed to healing. Most healers will favor crit/surge over power, but there is still no doubt that cunning > than anything

I was always told Cunning is the stat for the Smuggler. So I've been focusing on getting that stat higher.

Thats right poly cunning is the main stat for smugglers. As chinua mentioned above the secondary stat is where you have a little more flexibility but still rather straight forward.
