    Over Leveling

Since I am new to MMOs in general, I have a simple question.
I heard from my guild I needed to start PVPing to build my Valor so I had a decent amount when I hit 50. So I started and spent quite a while doing that which of course also gave me leveling. I am at a point that I think I should be with this aspect of the game so I went back to the story line. I did not know that the story line did not adjust with your current level. I am now level 43 and my story is at around level 33. If I continue with the story mode, I get no XP for quest completed. My class quest are gray right now also. So here is my question.
Should I give up on the story since I seem to have out leveled it or can you skip ahead in the story somehow?

If I had known this is what would happen I would have just waited to PVP as I was enjoying the quest and the story of the game. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dead

You'll definitely want to do your story. It controls getting new companions and is one of the best parts in the game. You don't necessarily need to do the other quests there but they are worth it credit wise and potentially equipment wise for you or companions. Atleast for some orange equipment.

So if I read this right, even though I get no XP I should work through the story mode or I loose my companions. Thanks for the advice. Do I need to do any quest other than Class to get the companions or can I stick strictly to those? Also, what about the bonus quest. I was doing Nar Shaada but quit after I got about 1000 XP for 3 phases.
    Thanks again for the help.

The only quest that really matters is your class story. The others are side quests and don't control your companions. The bonus series stuff.. haven't finished any myself so not sure what the payouts are on those as far as credits and gear. Heroics are nice if you can find help.. or need any to finish it. But also not necessary. Unless you're a completionist.

I would just catch your story line quest to your current level then side quest or pvp to help out.

I say play god. All the quests will open commendations, companion gear and light/dark + affection points. If you have the time play god for a bit and just enjoy horribly dominating till you get caught up. Use the npc like pratice dummies and work your rotations.

just be sure to do all of belsavis (planet quest line) so you can unlock the dailies when you hit 50.

I sort of did the same thing. I took a break from the story quest and got caught up in PVP for about a week and got way ahead of the recommended level for my current position in the storyline quests.

But as everyone has mentioned above, it is up to you. You cannot advance to the higher level storyline quests unless you complete the early ones first. And as for your companions, you unlock those as you go through the storyline quests.

^ This is what I've been doing. I am a bit of a completionist, so even though I am not gaining anything of value from these quests I enjoy the story very much and have a sick need to complete everything. So I just have fun and plow through everything and enjoy the story along the way.

It should also be noted that the side quests on each planet do present the opportunity for companion affection gain, which can also lead to unlocking more quests.

What schism said. You may get no xp but you still get everything else, especially credits.

This is great advice. You certainly need to do your class story quests and the other quests will be so easy and usually on the way, so might as well get them done, too. Also, not sure about all story quests, but the main story quests I've seen so far scale with your level. So when you have to go kill that guy from 3 planets ago, he might not just be a piece of cake.

As much as I hate to say it you tend to get too much xp in this game. There are so many quests that you can easily out level the next area before you finish the previous ones. If you PvP on top of that or even do the space dailies and flashpoints... Your quests will turn gray very quickly.

The bonus quests usally have a very interesting story. If you love questing or even SW lore these are not to be missed.

If you just want to PvP and get to end game you can skip everything but your class quests but I dont recomend it because you miss so much of the game. Especially when some quests chain from planet to planet.

Been using this advice without knowing it was posted. Decided to concentrate on the Class quest but throw in some sides that are on the way. I have found this to be very useful in learning rotations that are slightly different from the ones I was doing. It gives me a chance to try different skills and get use to where i have them bound. Before this I was moving skills into slots that I had others in in order to keep my muscle memory the same. All that did was get me killed because I found I needed one I moved and would hit the wrong key. Playing this way is like an extended training session for now. Only downside is because I am sooooooo much higher than the rest I don't have to be fast on the rotation. I just hope this is not going to hurt me in PVP.

One side topic, I was doing a 2+ Heroic on Nar Shaada (spelling?) and when I went into the first room, the first Boss was level 50. Needless to say, that did not go so well. So I guess I can't take it for granted that I am God at this point. lol.

Thanks for all the replies. It is all really good advice.

if you drastically out level the content where it's grey I'd advise only doing your class quest, and not any side quests. (unless you want to use commendations for alts)

I'm leveling an alt purely through pvp currently (level 26 valor rank 25) and have only been doing class quests to unlock companions, which increases the amount of companions I can deploy.

Commendations can also be used to buy stuff you can then sell for credits.

As stated above you really want to do the class story as that is the way to get new companions. Thus giving you more options of npcs to play with / send on missions etc.
I generally do quests until they are green. Grey ones arent really worth it unless you really need the commendations and/or the light/dark points.

You can always go back and finish off chains / bonus series etc after you have leveled. Reason for doing the class chain at least is at 50 it does unlock some stuff also. Like extra Ilum stuff is avial.
Also I agree with pvp, Weave pvp into youir play means you have that valor headstart by the time you hit 50. Level 60 valor needed for the best pvp gear and sooner you get there the better.
I am 46 on my current toon and I have valor 27 ... some people might have more some less but its a indication of what you could be, I dont pvp mega loads either
