    Malavai Quinn and healing rotation

has anyone else had problems with Quinn not healing to his full ability in combat? i have all of his abilities turned on, but he is more inclined to spam Med Scan and Medical Probe than he is to use Kolto Shot (his "big" heal). even when the ability is ready to use and my spleen is dangling off my pancreas, he wont fire it off

i have seen him use it, but it usually only goes off once during a fight, even if it refreshes.

    Turn some abilities off

First, turn off the carbonite stream ability. Not just Quinn of course, any healer will spam this like an idiot while they should be healing. I learned this the hard way after watching (from my corpse) my friend's healer use this constantly on a boss instead of healing him. Of course it goes without saying the boss was immune, but that didn't stop the healer from using it.

Second, turn off the two attack abilities. This will tighten up their healing rotation significantly. The damage you are missing is nearly insignificant. As a dps in tank stance I've fought and ended boss fights with damn near full health using these tips.

    Hope this helps.

Yes, this is the best advice (if you have decent gear and all that jizzy jazz of course) but at the same time as jimjones mentions that little bit of DPS you're missing doesn't really matter in the end because well it's hardly even a fraction unless they're geared out the butt which is hard to do for one and two if they have better gear than yourself something is definitely wrong

All that being said, yes, I'd take this advice (if you're comfortable with it of course) and if not just be sure that any ability that is equivalent to carbonite stream is turned off at first and if you want to leave one or two damage abilities on for them to use on themselves then do so if you're not yet comfortable with having them all turned off at once and then get used to them not using them at all and you should be set. I wouldn't just jump right into all of them being turned off at once because you may be like " WTF?! What happened to my healer!?" if it just happens they get mauled and die without you realizing it because I know it's happened to me at the last minute I realized WHY I'm not being healed or my HP is at 10% and it's really too late for a med pack.

I think I said what I meant and meant what I said and understood what I meant to say is said and that all that I meant got through to you and anyone else that is reading what I typed and hopefully understand what was meant to have been said.

    Best advice about all companions.

I always have 2-3 abilities turn off for my companion. I’m tank so mainly use my healer companion when I soloing heroic quest. I have all AoE attacks turned off on my DPS companion because they always seem to spam them more often even in single target stance. You’ll notice a big difference in how fast mobs die when your companion is just single target dpsing stuff down.

I agree as well. I turned all of quinn's attacks off. His healing increased a bit and don't even notice the lack of damage. I tank so having a healer is more important to me than dps.

interesting. ill try it out. i do have to say that the carbonite stream is very useful for crowd controlling extra mobs. the problem is he opens with it, usually on the mob im attacking (and i promptly break the freeze). there should be a line of code added into their behavior that says something like Carbonite Stream = set additional mob = yes. primary target < no other targets aggressive = yes

i guess it all comes down to a balance. i don't want to leave him defenseless, because his attack often hits before my force leap lands, causing 1 or more to run in his direction. standing back like he does often attracts a patrol.

well, this thread is more about Malavai than a player's healing rotation... but speaking as a former Sith Sorcerer who leveled as healing spec, its all about efficiency. your rejuv and regen heals are your best friends, and youll use them more than any other. the big AE heal is for groups that are close together. you dont have any force regen abilities, so as a pure healer you can run out of gas in a sustained fight. channeling force lightning allows the natural force regeneration to kick in, so doing that once in a while lets your force bar replenish. there is a talent proc that gives a boost to various abilities, one of which is a reduced casting time for the 3-second casting heal (reduced to 1.5 seconds). when that proc goes off, you can use it to give a dying ally a big boost.

other than this short explanation, try out the various healing guides for your class.

I think that Quinn is a crappy healer. He can never keep up with the mobs I am fighting, and they are 1-3 levels below me. I ditched him as soon as I got Jaesa. Haven't looked back ever since

What level are you talking about? He rocks as soon as you get him and does just fine in the late 30s. Never had any problems with him.

Apologies in advance if I'm stating the obvious, but don't forget that Kolto Jolt applies a cooldown debuff to the target (i.e. you), so even though the skill itself recharges in 15 seconds, it can only be used on the same target every 30 seconds.

I've found sometimes switching him to passive for 2 seconds, and then back to active again, will make him actually do his job - I believe that's largely a range issue.

    THIS...
I've run into this problem with Mako also. I believe there is some flaw in the AI on our companions that BW has yet to find/fix.
