If you are trying to decide which to play, I say take both to 10. That will give you a decent feel for the playstyles. Consular can go ranged or melee, knight is pure melee. Knight is either a wall of hp or a dps machine, consular shadow can be pretty much whatever you want as long as it's stealth and melee, sage is ranged dps or healing.
