Basically, you need a Windows virtual machine installed on your linux distrubution, such as Wine. You'll find the download, instructions, everything there
Well, technically it's only playable on Windows. Thank goodness you have Wine for Linux and Bootcamp or Parallels for OSXWouldn't want people to miss out on the fun because they don't have Windows.
It should work. I have played other MMOs using wine. The fact that SWTOR promotes itself to a higher user level during init may cause issues but if this isn't an issue with wine then it should work just fine.
As far as I can tell: It doesn't run with wine yet.
There is a problem regarding the connection to the server.
It's considered that there might be an unimplemented function, but until now there is only this tought.
One older entry in the application database of wine (findable on appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24528) is rated as gold: was playable "out of the box".
Since there was a change, it's not any more playable like mentioned above.
Because I don't really want to play under win7 (damn I really hate windows) I've to wait even owning a pre ordered version… if you ask me - there is a good chance to see it running within the next month. But this depends on various points of course.![]()
I agree that it probably will be made to run acceptably with Wine at some point. The more popular it is, the sooner that is likely to be. It's going to be Windows only because the developers elected to go with DirectX (specifically Direct3d for graphics rather than OpenGL). DirectX is developed by Microsoft and only available for Windows. Mac and Linux (as well as most video game consoles and Android and iOS devices) use OpenGL for 3D graphics.
World of Warcraft was developed for both Direct3D and OpenGL (because of the OS X port). They even maintain an OpenGL option for Windows (rumors say this is to make it easier for Linux users to run through Wine; the outlook being, why not keep it, since you have to maintain OpenGL for OS X anyway?)
Since other systems besides Windows are steadily growing in popularity, it's likely that OpenGL development will begin to move forward at a faster pace than Direct3D (the opposite of what was going on last decade while Windows was so dominant). Since the future looks to be cross platform (thanks to the growing popularity of smart phones, tablets, and even, to a lesser extent, OS X and Linux), the future also looks to be OpenGL.
If OpenGL really does begin to be more favored again, it's good news for me since I run Linux primarily. I probably won't actually be getting SW:TOR unless I can run it through Wine.
Wine is not fully support all DX features, and some Win API functions fully, so SWTOR can't run at Linux environment with Wine.
Well, it's true that Wine doesn't fully support everything in DirectX. However, since it already did run with Wine during beta, there is no reason to assume that it's impossible for it to run with Wine again. Of course, it is also possible that it will not ever work again. I'd lean toward it working again however.
Normally i'd suggest a vmware vsphere for this type of use but their graphics implementation is pretty rudimentary; they just added 3d acceleration a couple version ago. (i.e. not meant for gaming)
I used to play EQ2 inside of parallels fusion in OSX and that worked fairly well, had some minor graphics bugs but at least it worked. I'm not sure if theres a version of fusion for linux but if there is i would suggest that, otherwise take a look at crossover games. It's built on wine but they do all the hard work of configuring wine just right with all the dll's and what not necessary to run complex games. Once it's added to their list of supported games you're golden.
