The kits come from reverse engineering orange items. Each one you RE gives an component. When you get 10 of the same level type you can craft an augmentation kit.
If recall correctly, it's not just orange items, but any item with a green value or higher within the same rank of the augment you want to create.
You are correct, ive gotten 1 per RE from greens and blues
It is in fact a guaranteed drop when RE'ing greens, blues, etc. the going best practice to grind these out is to craft the cheapest green pattern you have at a particular level and RE to your hearts content.

Ive found from armormech that the waist items to craft are the cheapest to craft material wise. Like 2 Zal alloy 2 thermo and 2 durasteel and RE them to get 1 slot item.
"Hope for the Best, Expect the Worst."
The expensive part is the 30k to attach plus aquiring the purple tech parts for the best possible augment in each slot.
OK I haven't tried this yet....I know I know, what the heck have I been doing? Actually playing a new game ( shhhh don't tell anyone ) so how does the process work? I mean do I have to get a new recipe for my artifice, snyweave, armormech guys? I see I can make cheap items and then RE them, but do I need a seperate recipe to make the kit? Or did they just give it to me and I haven't seen it yet?
dodgerfn...

Can Arnormech craft Augments? If so how because there are no schematics at the trainer. Do we have to RE one?
Yes, but augment patterns are available via slicing, not the trainer. Only the augment slot pattern is available from the trainer. If you happen to have a critically successful slicing mission for augment parts, you get the possibility of getting a green pattern for the level that the augment parts mission is for (IE: Mark 6 augments = Level 49 Tech Part Missions, etc.). Once you get the pattern, you have to follow the standard Green -> Blue -> Purple RE process.
If you don't have a slicer, I'd recommend stalking the trade network for deals. depending on the price of the pattern, the purchase can pay off reasonably quickly.
