what SWTOR might look like if it became F2P

    http://www.theoldrepublicordie.com/2012/07/05/what-would-swtor-f2p-look-like/

I read this and almost made me wanna quit. The way things are going, I wouldn't doubt that SWTOR went F2P especially with the legacy system.

Like i always say with F2P MMO's, if it goes in that direction, expect my sub cancellation soon after.

Thats the point of F2P. You dont need to pay a Sub. :-)
But I dont think SWTOR will ever go F2P. To me it seems ppl read to much in to that misquote. Its talk about make WoW F2P too.

And even if it did go to F2P I dont think its next week or so. it be in a year or 2 even. So why worry now?

It's just a hypothetical discussion on the possibilities of a F2P model for SWTOR. Yes, I can see the possibilities they point towards, but at the same time the entire discussion is fundamentally flawed for obvious reasons.

Take a look at the F2P model. You have 2 types of games in this bracket.
    1. Games that have been designed F2P and revolve around this model (Tribes: Ascend, World of Tanks, League of Legends etc)
    2. Games that were sub based but failed to turn a profit (WAR, Aeon etc.)

The games in the 1st bracket are usually highly succesful, they drew in a crowd on launch and expanded on it. The games in the 2nd bracket have usually died of and F2P is the last resort to keep it afloat. The F2P model doesn't change anything about the reasons why the game failed though. It just makes starting a game easier. But the reasons for failing are still present. So the legitimate question is, what does F2P actually gain these games? The answer is of course as obvious as it is painful. I'm sure there will be exceptions but generally the games in the 2nd bracket just slowly fade away.

It is therefor reasonable to expect the same would happen to SWTOR if it were to go F2P. So F2P is not a solution. It's just a way to earn back the investments done in the game. But it is a sign of failure, and of companies trying to do their best to sqeeze as much money out of a game as possible.

I can't see SWTOR going F2P soon. There's too much in the pipeline at the moment and there's plenty of subs active for Bioware to turn a decent profit on the game. And generally speaking, F2P just doesn't seem to get the results for games that weren't designed from the get-go with a F2P model in mind. So steer clear would be my advice.

I don't care what was said. I would bee shocked if this goes f2p. It's owned by EA and ultima online is still up and is a sub type game.

Plus I really think this game is on the rise. In the past 2 weeks alone seen a lot of new players that played the trial and subbed and a lot of people comming back.

I agree. I just hope this TORtanic does not live up to this name.

You do realize that if it goes F2P there will still be a subscription model right? You are still welcome to pay $15 a month and get access to all the stuff.

LotRO is a perfect example of a game that started out with a subscription model, went F2P, and is even more successful now than it was. I've played it a bunch since it went F2P and if you're subscribing, the only things to actually buy are cosmetic items or temporary skill boosts. Honestly, I don't see the problem.

Not necessarily. It really depends how the overlords that are EA, want to make it work. If they want only F2P then that is what will happen.

Every single game ive ever played that started subscription and went free... turned to sh--. Without fail.

I laugh histarically thinking about an MMO that would go FTP less than a year after release. Trolls be trollin when they make claims that this is the immediate future for TOR
