What makes Tuesday the most obvious choice for maintenance to servers?
Not just for games, but websites and everything. Of all the maintenance times set on a weekly basis, Tuesday is the most commonly used day for maintenance.
Why?

Doesn't World of Warcraft still have wednesdays maintenance?
LOL i didnt mean every game. Just the majority of servers ive heard of, not just those for games, have maintenance on Tuesday for some reason.
Just curious as to why.
I played WoW for years and it was always Tuesday maintenance. My best guess is they can get the weekend off, Monday to review and make the final plans, Tuesday for maintenance, and the rest of the week to fix any problems that come up.![]()

My bad then, as I thought it obvious as to why they have to shut down all the servers at the same time. I'd say the main reason you have do shut them down at the same time is because they're connected in some form together. Both EU, US and Asia. There's most likely also a way to work between the different departments as well.
I think it has to do with player numbers. I think that most companies find that tuesdays are the least played days of the week, so maintenance impacts the lowest number of players at any given time.
I think that's why Blizzard does Tuesday maintenance. My guess is that BW looked at when other people do their maintenance and said "well, if they use Tuesday, we should too".
Just my opinion.

I'm sure at some point people checked their activity stats and instead of bringing the servers down for random maintenance (sometimes during peak hours when needed) they realized they would effect the fewest users Tuesday mornings.
It's probably the first morning of every week with little activity. Obviously there are the few with weird hours, but a vast majority of players are busy from ~8-5 Monday through Friday. Also, of those people, most will take vacations on Mondays and Fridays to extend the weekend.
That makes Tuesday mornings the first day of the week where they'll see limited activities in the morning.
Mouse, I'm not talking about Blizzard at all in my second post. I'm talking about the different regions of the Servers of BIOWARE.
As to why on the same day between the companies, that's probably just some techie stuff going around between the companies. Why change too much so that other games are online while your game is offline for maintenance.
I'm a SysAdmin/DBA/Code Monkey/Jack of all Trades/Data Guru/Lord of all that is good and bad with my companies software that runs our terminals. We do major deployments on Tuesday, specifically Tuesday night. So why Tuesdays...
1) Tuesday is early enough in the week to give you a good chance that any issues (there are always issues, this is code) are cleaned up prior to the weekend.
2) Monday's suck.
3) Monday and Tuesday give you a last chance to clean up procedures, notify users, etc. No one wants to work the weekend, getting ready for stuff during the week.
I agree on a lot of the other posters, Tuesdays mornings are probably the least played times. Monday morning has hold overs from Sunday night. Monday, people are recovering from the weekend.

Tuesday has traditionaly always been a slow day in everything....look at your mail on Tues, not much usually. In fact, the USPS has talked about not delivering mail on Tues in the future. Most new releases come out on Tues...DVD's, video games, etc...I always thought they did this since there's not much going on on a Tues, the new release wanted to be the star of the show that day lol! Also, many restaurants offer specials on Tues night, such as kids eating free, because it's their slowest night.
Now having said all of that, I was surprised when BW decided to do their maint. on Tues, because indeed that is the day Blizz does it. I always thought if one game was down, people would play the other game maybe?? Maybe get wow players to play SWTOR when they couldn't play there game?? I don't know, just a thought.....
It is a deal with amazon.com. tuesdays are when all the new CDs and movies are released so shutting gamers down they have to browse the internet to salve their insomnia and that means shopping
