GAMESPY's opinion on SWTOR's sub failure

GameSpy: Star Wars: The Old Republic's Long Road to Free-to-Play - Page 1

Im still in the middle of reading this article...I really havent formed any kind of opnion on it as of yet...

Ya know as I read this article...It kinda saddens me that even ppl from EA/Bioware(if I read it right) cursed this game from the begining. Saying that this is gonna be one of the biggest failures due to A/B and C(A/B and C refering to the many complaints that SWTOR should have had certain things from the the Get-go). Or maybe it was just from the many ppl that were former EA/Bioware workers that got mad cuz they got layed off...

I'm reading the article now, but if it helps any to have perspective of GameSpy's opinion of SWTOR from the start here it is: GameSpy: GameSpy's Concerns About Star Wars: The Old Republic - Page 1

So if they ever had a negative article about the game does that disqualify their opinion on what went wrong?

They make their money delivering their opinions on games and making people care what their opinions are. When a game hasn't even released and they're writing articles about how they have no faith in the game's success, do you think they're going to have a lot of great things to say about it down the road?

If they wrote about how it's great how at least 1/2 their complaints they had in their first article (and likely more they didn't write about) has been addressed in significantly less than a year it wouldn't look good. If they wrote about how BioWare made the mistake of thinking this game was appropriate for the sub model and are now wise to go F2P they'd have the same problem.

Instead, every move BioWare makes, good or bad, will be ignored or over-analyzed based on the goal of making their point. Such is media.

I'll put this in its simplest terms. People that see only the worst never concede any other point trying to justify their self worth. They choose to vindicate themselves everywhere they go. There are many recent examples of this. You look for the negatives and never report the positives. Media/individuals should never try to justify themselves for the sake of in an antagonistic way. Make your point present the evidence to support your point and conclude. Simple and straight forward. Gamespy has always had an ax to grind when it comes to not only swtor but games that do not heavily advertise with them. I question their objectivity. I also question the love fest pc gamer often had with Bioware. But at least they somewhat tempered their articles by acknowledging the flaws within the game. But looking for vindication in something negative is something a child does, a simple mind. Being oblivious to the truth isn't always healthy either but at least those people are nicer to be around, have their stuff read.

Gamespy has a tradition of supporting non-MMO games much more than MMO games due to their long history in the FPS and strategy game communities (the old Gamespy server finder, etc.). They are also part of IGN, and well, its IGN. I find some of their opinion pieces amusing, and some of their movie reviews matching my opinions about a movie, but IGN is also not necessarily as "keen" on the PC community as much as they are on consoles, etc.

PCGamer and its BW lovefest - BW has traditionally put out high quality games (KOTOR 1, Mass Effect) and has always supported the PC gaming community. Hence, the lovefest that PCGamer has with them. That, and PCGamer tends to support RPG & MMO games equal with FPS/Strategy/Flavor of the Month games, at least in my opinion based on the last, idk, 10 years of readership of their magazine.

I haven't read the Gamespy piece yet. I might do that when I have some downtime. I'll take it with the standard grain of salt I use for opinion pieces surrounding a game's demise (regardless of commentator) that I read.

Like you I have read and subscribed to PC Gamer magazine over the years and can recall the free CD that came with the subscriber issue. I recall the magazine pre coconut monkey and post. I realize and agree with most of what you said. They tended to go overboard at times. I didn't mind it but I have heard others did. They at least acknowledged the games flaws from time to time. Gamespy just goes beyond opinion into negative bashing, sometimes for the sake of. I know they like FPS games but if you can't report free of bias then why bother? It destroys your credibility when you write an op/ed piece. It is what it is, but why be vindictive? Its petty.

I make it my practice to ignore opinion pieces on any media. Books, movies, music, games, whatever. I may peruse the pieces for technical info and screen shots, but opinions are just that - opinions. Now, someone had once claimed that opinions can't be wrong. That isn't true. when it is obviously tainted by personal or corporate bias and then presented to the public as fact, it can most certainly be wrong.

Now, SWTOR has had its fair share of issues. I weathered them, complaint-free. I knew the game would, ultimately, improve or completely collapse. As it is, it has improved considerably, and it would seem like the F2P is working out well, as did the mass mergers. Any MMO will have issues, bugs, kinks, and features (or lack thereof) that people will complain about. I used to fight back against the naysayers. It is as futile as convincing a Wall Street crook that money is bad. So, I leave them to their opinions. they are entitled to them. Heh, I am even thinking of unblocking clamus, i did sac and he isn't as volatile as he used to be and i like some of the things he contributes. don't know, though, yet, cuz clamus has a habit of personally attacking me and that pushed my buttons to respond in kind. i don't necessarily like that.

Anyway...critics are just that, critical of whatever they are reviewing. they bring along all the baggage and preconceptions which often taint any piece's actual veracity or value.
