    Legacy name change

Just read the patch notes and saw this. Frankly, I think this sucks bigtime. To me, this is the worst thing BW has done in the game. I loved the uniqueness of my name, and it could only be my name. That was the beauty of legacy! You really had to think long and hard about what you wanted to be known as...forever. Not any more. I'm really dissapointed.

    Any thoughts?

Kind of agree, the uniqueness was cool, but I know a lot of unoriginal people were screwed out of their legacy names with server merges, I assume this is to appease most of them.

On a side thought, could be cool for couples that play the game. Both Husband and Wife accounts can pick the same legacy name.

I hear ya on the couples thing, but I would think that would be a select few ( have no data to back that up, just IMO ). I was trying to think of any reason why they would do this, and I bet your right, to appease those few that lost it in the merge. I lost 3 of my toons names when I merged, but I didn't complain about it, just one of those things. But to me the legacy name is a bigger deal.

My other half refuses to play this game, however my son plays so I can kind of see the coolness of having the same legacy name. Although neither of us have a problem with different legacy names. I could also see some guilds using it. All said, I'm not a big fan of the idea. Like most of you, I really liked the idea of a unique legacy name.

This is correct. This is a change made exactly for the preparation of server mergers.

My wife was actually upset, when we first started, that we couldn't share a legacy name. When we get a free change she said she's going to adopt mine. Looks like my smuggler's getting hitched after all... and after all that work to beat the (fairly forward) companions back...

The argument that you no longer have to think about what you pick isn't accurate. Aside from the one time free switch it's at least going to cost money if you want to switch it so it's still best to pick something you'd want to keep. Also, from a RP perspective having common last names makes sense.

The only downside in all of this is a loss of account identification. It kind of stinks because I actually did pay attention to legacy names and frequently noticed people I knew on their alts and knew instantly it was them. Granted, for the most part there's only going to be one (maybe two) people per legacy name anyway, and they'll generally know each other, but you can't be 100% sure at a glance anymore.

Overall, I foresee a lot of complaining and then a couple of weeks later everyone will forget. Mostly because the effects will not even be significant (unless you're trying to get the sirname Skywalker or something).

Really no issue for me. Just not a role player. I understand you point though.

I disagree with the one or two people having the same surname....I forsee a million Skywalkers and Vaders running around.

I think you are right Soul, my wife tried Skywalker and it didn't say unavailable, it said prohibited (treated it like a curse word). This was pre 1.2 so things may have changed.
I am a bit disappointed that Legacy names are no longer going to be unique. I see both sides of the argument. Those that had to migrate to your server put as much time and effort into picking out the right one as you did. They have the same right as you do to have the name, but I feel that allowing more than one account to have the same name degrades the idea of a Legacy name a bit. I felt unique with the name I have chosen and can say I am of <insert name here> Legacy so my friends and guildies know it's me on that character and no one else. If they are going through with allowing multiple instances of a Legacy name, then I hope they limit the amount of accounts that can lay claim to that name.

How many Chuck, C'huck, Ch'uck, etc... Norris characters are there going to be now? I see an influx.

I may mix two of them up and think ill of all of them just because one of them is annoying. In this case I'm almost certain it will actually just save me time getting to know them all individually...
