What is the etiquette for loot-rolling? (for both you and your companion)

I'm curious. What is the looting etiquette for on BoE gear when you're grouped up? For instance if you are a squishy, and you have a heavy-armor companion. If you are partnered up with a heavy-armor player, and both of you see a heavy armor item that's an upgrade for the player and your companion, would it be wrong to roll on it? And if so, how much in the wrong would it be?

I mean, if I were a heavy, and I saw a squishy rolling on heavy armor gear for their companion, and I needed the gear as an upgrade too..I'd be pissed. But I'm thinking in this game, I'm going to be seeing a lot of this going on. Anyone else given any thought to this?

First of all, companion items are labeled companion items, you can't equip your companion with user gear I think this kinda resolves it hehe

Actually you can equip normal player gear onto companions, they do also get specific companion gear for them only.

I'd say the best course of action would be to discuss loot beofre teaming up. failing that I'd say greed only for companion upgrades, if a player needs it then they can need, every class will have light/med and heavy armour wearing companions so I'd assume greed only for them.

ya, I was wrong..damn morning dazeness

Anyway, you can equip any gear you want, you figure out what's the companion's role (tank/dps) and you start equipping him with that gear. However, what I was trying to say earlier, but it kinda failed me, is that probably end-game companion gear will probably be companion specific. It's not official, just a guess of mine. Also, I think party loot wise, companions have the least priority on items. Basicly, if no player wants it, then everybody can roll if for their companions, look at is as a 2 level bidding

I think of me as a humble and nice person. I usually think about others first. But if some douchebag would roll need for an item to give it to his Companion i would rip his heard out =)

I think at least at the start, it's gonna be a JUNGLE up there ... everyone will roll for gear, doesn't matter if its for char or companion

Alexe, thats why (for the first few month at least) I will only be grouping with my GF and long time guildies and friends that plus the voice comms and silliness that accompanies such groups

Yeah, I would definitely say that it depends on the group/guild that your in...When I played EQ2, we would all roll for items that we needed rather than wanted. If we accidentally rolled on something that a teammate really needs, we would just give it to them out of respect. I personally think tis crap when group leaders get the choice of what they want. I see everything as a team effort and the loot should be shared on a group effort basis. If one person needs an item more so than anyone else, that person gets it. If its something that no one needs but is a very good item, everyone rolls on it. If it is something that two or more people need, those two or more people roll on it and fate decides. I like an honor system personally. Unfortunately though, this only works with a guild/group that you can trust however. As people are unfortunately selfish and greedy...

This type of question is why.. at least for the beginning.. you will most likely want to group with people you know/trust to spread the loot respectfully. MMOs are full of "OMGNEWITEMS" people, just avoid them with friends.

That's why guildies are best. But as far as ettiquette goes I would expect something to shake out like this:

    Personal need
    Companion need
    reverse engineer
    greed

But meh. Not particularly worried about it. But then again I'm working with folks I know and will put trust in.

Of course it's ideal to run with people you know and trust, but that doesn't always happen. Sometimes you start a new toon on you own, while your friends race to lvl 50. Sometimes your friends might already be in a full group. There is always going to be PUGs that one is going to take a risk with.

Before, rolling for your alt was easily discouraged. But having your companion makes things slightly more difficult. One has to take a second look at an item and see if it may be usable, not to mention compete with others in the same way.

Not sure this makes things easier or more complicated but during beta I noticed an option to enable item comparison for both yourself and your companion, so when you mouse over an object it will compare the item to your currently equiped piece of armour and your companions with a summary of total +- stats at the bottom. Really helpful option (in the right hands)

I just discussed it before rolling. As long as a player did not need the item then need rolls for companions were acceptable. I totally understand you are going to get loot freaks rolling need on everything to start with though. One problem I saw in the beta was that items were not tradeable in a flashpoint. So if someone 'accidently' rolled need, they could not trade it to you later. Hopefully this gets changed at release or in a quick update patch.

Lol, just as above. I would ask permission from the player that wants it, because it may just be a minor upgrade for them. If they say yes, I will need otherwise I will pass or greed.

I have been lucky enough to roll with people who enjoy others performing well. Our stance has always been as follows:

    1. Main spec loot is fair game for all.
    2. Offspec only after nobody needs mainspec
    3. Gentlemen's rules, so feel free to pass for someone who needs something more

You'd be surprised how often rule 3 was used. We'd have people arguing over giving away loot that they'd won.

In PUGs usually I'd go with talking it through before the group rolls, but greed on all basic stuff, and need if you really need. Needing for no reason = kick.

With companions I'd considering them off-spec basically. In other words, if nobody needs for his/her toon, then go right ahead. Needing over a real character probably means a one-way ticket to my ignore list and a kick from the group.
